Wilson Garden Crematorium

Whether it is bad roads or air pollution, Bengaluru residents have to endure a lot. And it seems that the city’s dead are not spared either, as witnessed by the Wilson Garden Crematorium, which is a dingy and filthy domain of the dead. The electric crematorium at Kalpalli offers space for only 10 cremations a day, but it looks like a garbage dump yard. Heaps of plastic covers of agarbattis or camphor, rubbish, food packets and stray dogs make their way into the cramped crematorium. The stench is enough to raise the dead!

BBMP claims it spends lakhs on the maintenance of its crematoriums, but there is not much to show for it. Most of the structures are in a state of disrepair and pose a danger to people who bring their loved ones to bid adieu to them. The roof of the Wilson Garden and Kalpalli crematoriums are leaky and their ceilings have spalled, exposing corroded steel bars.

The BBMP also fails to clear the garbage on the premises of these structures. Even though they have garbage bins, the trash remains stacked up outside the crematorium. The BBMP health inspector Divya confirmed this and said that she had written to the BBMP projects department to request renovation of the Wilson Garden and Kalpalli electric crematoriums, but no proposal has been received.

In a desperate attempt to save its reputation, the BBMP recently started repairs at two burial grounds—Banashankari and Wilson Garden—which will cost it Rs 87.5 lakh and Rs 43.5 lakh respectively. The work includes installation of high-capacity water filters, refrigerators, toilets and bathrooms with solar and electric water heating systems. The BBMP has also been directed to install chairs outside the crematoriums.
