Baldur’s Gate 3 Mourning Frost Location
Quick Links
A big part of Baldur’s Gate 3 is finding the rare and unique artefacts that are scattered throughout Faerun. While some of these are in obvious locations, others are hidden very well, and you might not discover them right away.
One such item that is hidden within the game is the Mourning Frost staff. This is a great item for spellcasters such as Wizards and Druids to track down in the early hours of the game.
Of course, you will need to put in some work to get your hands on this staff. Here is how to get Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3.
What is the Mourning Frost and How to Get it in Baldur’s Gate 3
Mourning Frost is a very rare staff that you can obtain in Baldur’s Gate 3 that deals 1d8 bludgeoning and 1d4 cold damage. It has the following abilities:
- Heart of Ice: Attacks that deal cold damage deal one additional point of cold damage.
- Insidious Cold: Casting a spell that deals cold damage has a chance to inflict the Chilled status effect on the target.
This staff is a strong choice for low-level Wizards, Sorcerers, and Druids who are not wielding standard weapons, as it will allow them to get more out of spells that deal cold damage.
Unlike normal weapons in the game that can simply be found on a body, you need to piece the Mourning Frost together using three parts: the Icy Crystal, Icy Helve, and Icy Metal. They are all found in the Underdark.
Once you have found all three parts of the weapon, you can combine them to create the Mourning Frost.
Icy Crystal Location
The Icy Crystal is the top of the staff, and it is located in the Underdark near where you get your hands on the Sussur Tree Bark for the Masterwork Weapon. In this area, you will fight some Hooked Horrors and an NPC named Filro the Forgotten.
This fight can be rather difficult, so I recommend being at least level five before attempting it. Once you have defeated Filro the Forgotten, loot his body to get the Icy Crystal.
Icy Helve Location
The next piece of the staff is the Icy Helve, or the shaft of the weapon. This is also found in the Underdark and is easiest to reach by accessing the Underdark via the Selunite Outpost.
From the Selunite Outpost, head west and climb out of the window. You will find some petrified Drow and a Spectator. Defeat the group of enemies, and you will be able to loot the Icy Helve from Dhourn’s corpse after the battle.
Icy Metal Location
The final piece of the staff is the Icy Metal, or the tip of the staff. Unfortunately, this part takes the longest to obtain, as you will need to complete the quest for the Myconid Colony in the Underdark by defeating the Duergar intruders.
Completing this quest will grant you access to a hidden section of the Myconid Colony next to the Deep Rothé, where a Pale Corpse can be found. Loot this Pale Corpse to obtain the Ice Metal portion of the staff.
Crafting the Mourning Frost
Now that you have all three pieces of the Mourning Frost, you can craft it via the game’s crafting menu. To do this, simply select one of the staff’s pieces.
This will bring up the crafting menu. Select all the pieces and put them into the empty spaces. Press the combine button, and this will craft the Mourning Frost staff and add it to your inventory.
