Bloober Team Is Exploring A New Combat Loop For Space Horror Game

Summary

  • Cronos: The New Dawn offers a fresh combat experience with enemy merging for added difficulty.
  • Resource management is crucial in deciding between crafting ammo or health packs in Cronos.
  • The game merges Dead Space and Resident Evil gameplay for a thrilling survival-horror experience.

In case you didn’t know, Bloober Team, the studio responsible for the amazing Silent Hill 2 remake released last year, is working on a new horror game, and this one is based on an all-new IP.

While it’s still a third-person horror game, Cronos: The New Dawn is nowhere near a Silent Hill 2 clone.

Christophe Gans’ sequel is out in early 2026.

For this new IP, Bloober Team is bringing the big guns when it comes to combat, as the developer seeks to blend different survival-horror tropes to offer a fresh experience.

Cronos: The New Dawn Enemy Types

The big hook in Cronos: The New Dawn is how enemies “merge” with each other during combat and thus hikes up the difficulty and tension in real-time.

Much like in other survival-horror games, resource management will play a key role in Cronos, as players will need to decide whether to use their resources to craft ammo, or use those same resources to shore up their health packs.

When it comes to enemies, the trailer gives us a look at the different kinds of “Orphans,” which is what the developers call their monsters.

The “Runner” type that rushes at players to kill them as fast as they can. There’s also the Ranger who shoots at the players from a distance. The developers also mention Bruisers, which are more tank-like, that aim for the player to spend as much resources as they can to destroy this monstrosity.

With the game’s merge system, this means that your Runner enemy can merge and be a tank-like adversary, which is way harder to take down.

Silent Hill 2 Vs. Resident Evil 4: Which Game Is Best?

Both Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 4 are the top giants in the survival horror industry – but which game is better?

One thing players need to keep an eye out for is to space out their kills, so that enemies won’t be able to merge near fallen bodies.

The Traveler, who is your character in the game, won’t come unarmed. Players will be able to use the Javelin, which is a rapid-fire weapon that’s perfect for crowd control. There’s also the Hammer, which deals heavy damage at close range, much like a shotgun.

Cronos’ gameplay seems to be a cross between Dead Space and Resident Evil, and somehow, I don’t think survival-horror fans will have any problem with that.

Aside from Cronos: The New Dawn, Bloober Team is hard at work remaking the first Silent Hill, which Konami confirmed earlier this month.

Given how well Bloober Team developed the Silent Hill 2 remake, it’s no surprise that Konami is tapping them again. This is also why we’re very excited to see more of Cronos: The New Dawn, since it looks like the development team has nailed down how to handle survival-horror without having it feel too much like an action game. This is something the studio also admitted, mentioning how the SH2 remake gave them confidence as game developers.

Cronos: The New Dawn is set for release this fall for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
