How to Get the Cling Grip
In Hollow Knight: Silksong, something that will become immediately apparent is the lack of the Mantis Claw from the original Hollow Knight, an upgrade that allowed you to cling onto walls and jump off of them.
This wall jump ability remains in Silksong, now known as the Cling Grip. In order to get it, you’ll have to have finished Far Fields enough to get the ability to ride updrafts, and enter into Greymoor.
If you came here before doing the Flea Caravan quest, you’re going to want to do that. If you do not, there will be an incredibly tough fight with a Moorwing, which you’re able to do, but it would be wise to skip it by getting the quest done first.
From this point, we’re going to be entering and swiftly leaving Bellhart, as the upgrade we’re after is in Shellwood, directly to the left of Greymoor and Bellhart, and the container of our little prize.
Starting Shellwood
From the first room in Shellwood, jump across the floating platforms over water, until you see a platform suspended by a chain above you, next to a door that leads deeper in.
It may seem like a no-go at first, but you can get on the upper left platform here, dash, and time a jump incredibly well to barely grab onto the ledge to your right, which will allow you to proceed upwards.
It’s quite a bit more climbing, so make sure to use your floating cloak and dash liberally, and bounce off enemies if necessary. We’re aiming to get to the entrance at the top left, so keep on climbing.
Once you’ve gone up, past the purple flowers, and through a couple more enemies, the entrance out of here is right nearby. Head down the platforms and move the camera down where needed, then exit into the top right door.
Bench Room
Once you arrive, you’ll quickly notice a bench sign pointing up past a ledge you currently cannot climb up. No worries though; drop down, fight off more enemies, and head to the left.
From here, you can ascend a few more platforms, and pay to have a bench here, which I highly recommend. Either way, step on the pressure pad to the right and ascend up the elevator that it calls.
We’re heading due east, past the lake, up a few more chained platforms, then swerving back to the left. This sequence is a bit tricky, as you need to dive into a bunch of timed white flowers above a bed of spikes.
The best way to mitigate the challenge of this is by constantly activating your float unless you’re very sure of your positioning, as it can help you realign to a lower flower if you fail to hit the higher one.
These first couple aren’t much, though, and that was mostly just a tip for the rest of this area. That said, heading all the way west, and prepare for a big boss fight.
Sister Splinter
If you’ve come in prepared for a fight, you shouldn’t struggle too hard on this one. Sister Splinter will frequently stab the ground, but always does three stabs at a time, switching the direction with each stab.
Simply dash from side to side, hit her a bunch after the third stab, and continue for the entire boss. Things get tricks with thorny vines from the ceiling and a bunch of minions, but throwing out a ton of projectiles and traps tends to work like a charm.
This is the main blockade to the Cling Grip, though, and if you’re having trouble, you have opened up a ton of the game at this point and can go back to get an extra mask, get more tool slots, or find different tools to help out.
After she’s down, you get access to the upper left side of Shellwood. Be careful not to fall off here, as that will make you wrap all the way back around in order to get up where you are again.
Cling Grip
As you’re on these precarious top platforms, make sure your jumps off each ledge are calculated. Use the right stick to look down whenever you aren’t certain of where you’re going to land, and you should be able to navigate the first room just fine.
The flowers that jut their heads out at you are a pain, but can be handily dealt with them by throwing a projectile and backing off. I’m particularly fond of the Sting Shards for these, as they deal a ton of damage and make them easy to finish off.
Ascend upwards, be mindful of the flowers that can come to life and be an absolute nuisance, and don’t be afraid to play at range. Once you reach the room to the left, it’s a rather straight shot across the lake with very little in the way of punishment.
The area after the lake can be tricky, but just be patient, make sure to float after every jump, and you should manage to cross. Reaching the top right door, you’ll find a Weaver symbol, and get the Cling Grip by binding to it.
