Microsoft Creates AI-Generated Replica Of An FPS In Your Browser

Quake 2 image 2

Microsoft has launched a page on Copilot that lets gamers play the original Quake 2 on their browsers for free! According to Microsoft, this is an “experimental tech demo,” so don’t expect a bug-free experience.

For those unaware of the game’s history, Quake 2 was released on PC in 1997 and was developed by is Software. In the following years, the game would be released on every platform under the sun, with the latest being the “enhanced” version that was developed by Nightdive Studios, and was released in August 2023 for consoles and PC.

It’s not just a re-release, but an impressive one that feels like a remake.

The Quake franchise is widely considered one of the pillars of the genre, and while it might not be as big as it was before, there’s still a massive following, which culminates in the annual QuakeCon event. For this year, it’ll be held at the Gaylord Theater in Grapevine, Texas, and will run from August 7-10.

InZOI Director Weighs In On AI Use & Sims Comparisons – “It’s A Lot Of Pressure”

Director Hyungjun ‘Kjun’ Kim discusses InZOI’s use of AI, and how Sims comparisons affect the team.

While the free game we reported on today isn’t the first game available on browsers, nor will it be the last, it’s still a cool thing to see what AI is capable of when used properly.

Of course, this has much harsher implications, as this means a game can be created from scratch using AI, which is a scary thought. While we might be heading to that kind of future, I still think a machine can never replace the creativity of the human mind.

For now, enjoy the free game that you can play even on your company PC (and while working).
