  • Silent Hill 2 fans criticize the new gameplay trailer for Bloober Team’s upcoming remake, calling animations “stiff” and the game as a whole “rough”.
  • Some fans are also expressing concerns about the remake’s lack of grimy and unsettling atmosphere, which was a key element in the original game.
  • Analysts and fans are disappointed by the combat-focused trailer, as Silent Hill 2 has never been about combat and they believe it misses the point of the game.

During yesterday’s State of Play showcase, Bloober Team showed off some new gameplay from its upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2. Unfortunately, the trailer hasn’t gone down too well with fans. Some are calling the animations “stiff”, while others believe the game as a whole is looking “rough”.

Bloober’s remake of Silent Hill 2 was first announced during a special Konami showcase dedicated entirely to Silent Hill back in October 2022. Now, well over a year later, Konami and Bloober have released a new combat-focused trailer during PlayStation’s most recent State of Play event. Alongside the brief 1-minute and 34-second trailer, a new free-to-play Silent Hill game titled ‘The Short Message’ was also shadow-dropped on the PlayStation store during the event.

Bloober Team Says Silent Hill 2 Remake Is Going Well, But Some Fans Are Skeptical

The apology post template may not have been the best format.

Silent Hill 2 is coming exclusively to PlayStation 5 and PC, but the remake currently has no firm release date, and fans think there’s a very good reason for that. Shortly after the new combat trailer was revealed, fans took to X, Reddit, and YouTube to express some of their concerns. The most notable of these revolve around the game’s stiff animations, clunky combat, and poor visuals.

Andy Kelly, a PR employee for Devolver Digital, believes the remake “looks too clean.” When compared side-by-side, it’s clear that the upcoming remake doesn’t quite have the same grimy effect that the original Silent Hill 2 had. There was dirt on the floor, blood dripping down the walls, mould growing in every corner of every room. It was an aesthetic that made you feel uneasy and, quite frankly, dirty.

Others, such as video game analyst MauroNL, are hoping that the remake is still at least 6 months away, due to the most recent trailer looking “kinda rough.” To be more specific, Mauro says that the animations of Silent Hill 2 look stiff, while the sound design “lacks punch.” They (like many others) also believe the combat is clunky.

Some fans even took shots at the unnecessary quick-time events shown in the trailer. X user TotallyPointless mocked the decision to include QTEs, saying, “I’ve said it for years, the ONE THING Silent Hill 2 was missing, the ONLY THING stopping it from being a masterpiece, FUCKING QUICK TIME EVENTS.”

But one of the main takeaways from the trailer was fans’ concerns that Bloober Team is kind of missing the point of Silent Hill 2 completely by releasing a trailer dedicated to combat. Content creator Shirrako took to X to express their concerns, saying that “Silent Hill was never about combat, and the combat was always something players aimed to avoid.”

DualShockers’ own Robert Zak delved deeper into this specific concern, as he too believes that the combat trailer “misses the point.” If you’re looking for a better understanding of why combat probably shouldn’t be the highlight of a Silent Hill 2 trailer, I highly encourage you to read Robert’s full feature piece.
