In a twist that has left fans cautiously optimistic, Wizards of the Coast clarified that the DMCA takedown was issued “mistakenly.”

Wizard of the Coast Takes Aim at Baldur’s Village

Baldur’s Village Mod

Baldur’s Village lets you romance fan-favorite characters like Astarion and Shadowheart in a Stardew Valley setting, complete with new locations, dialogue, and interactions inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3.

After over a year of development, the mod launched to fan acclaim, only to vanish from Nexus Mods on March 29th due to a reported DMCA claim from WotC. Nexus Mods previously confirmed the take-down via PC Gamer, expressing disappointment while hinting that WotC’s move may have been a mistake.

“Hopefully, this is an oversight from WotC, who often use external agencies to hunt down violating content, and they will revert their decision. Fingers crossed for Baldur’s Village.”

The backlash was immediate, with gamers and modders slamming WotC’s decision across social media:

“If you’re wondering why nobody trusts WotC anymore, look no further.”

“Nintendo levels of takedown energy, but without a single ounce of their goodwill or consistency.”

Wizards of the Coast has a habit of turning victories into PR disasters. Their attempt to revoke the Open Gaming License in 2023 triggered industry-wide outrage, with many fans abandoning Dungeons & Dragons for alternatives like Pathfinder.

Their handling of Magic:The Gathering has also drawn ire, particularly their $999 30th Anniversary loot boxes, which were widely criticized as exploitative. And then there’s WotC’s initial denial of using AI-generated art in promotional materials, only to be caught and forced into an embarrassing backpedal.

Each of these missteps has eroded goodwill. Luckily, in the latest development, WotC has hastily offered an apology stating:

“We are in the process of fixing that now so fans and the Stardew community can continue to enjoy this great mod!”

As of the latest update, the mod remains under review, but it seems likely that this will be rectified shortly.
